Roddick Tennis Foundation Castle Rock Update

(Press release from Dave Holder & Castle Rock)

COTTONWOOD SHORES, TX (December 14, 2007) -- The Andy Roddick Foundation (ARF), in cooperation with CastleRock Texas, The City of Cottonwood Shores, and the Marble Falls Community Tennis Association, announces plans to establish an 8.2 million dollar green and sustainable tennis facility in the Texas Hill Country. The Andy Roddick Foundation International Tennis Center will be built on land contributed by the partners of CastleRock Texas, located on Ranch Road 2147 in Cottonwood Shores, Texas.

"On behalf of the CastleRock Texas partners, Ludwig Kuttner, Robert Peerman and myself, we're over-the-top-excited to put up the land for the Andy Roddick Foundation International Tennis Center," said Marley Porter, CastleRock builder-architect. "And to think that this center will help kids for generations to come . . . that's what giving and CastleRock are all about," he added.

The ARF International Tennis Center will serve as the central training facility for the Andy Roddick Youth Tennis Program, which provides at risk youth an opportunity to learn the game of tennis and to compete on local, state and national levels. Its efforts to curtail the rising incidence of diabetes and obesity among American youth include instruction in nutrition and mentoring programs geared toward college readiness.

Top-ranked American tennis star Andy Roddick, 26, founded his foundation at the young age of 17, when he realized he was in a position to positively influence the lives of children. On October 3, 2007, his foundation implemented its youth tennis program in San Antonio in cooperation with the Rene Lacoste Foundation, The USTA Tennis and Education Fund, Our Lady of the Lake University and The Boys and Girls Club of San Antonio.

Plans for the CastleRock facility emerged from efforts by the Marble Falls Area Community Tennis Association (MFCTA) to find land for public courts. David Holder, marketing director of MFCTA, contacted local musician and tennis enthusiast, john Arthur martinez for assistance. "I asked my friend Marley Porter to do some drawings to seed the donation process. I was floored when he responded that he would not only do the initial drawings but would donate the land for the facility," Martinez explained. "The plans to create the most green and sustainable tennis facility in the world, with a proposed retractable roof over several of the courts, I knew would generate some interest."

Porter was recently recognized by Natural Home and Garden as one of the top ten green architects in America. Porter's drawings moved Sal Castillo of the United States Tennis Association (USTA) to invite Dr. Lawrence Roddick and Blanche Roddick to meet with Porter and the MFCTA. Castillo pointed out that no one has yet created a tennis facility with a retractable roof in the United States. After several meetings and phone conferences, all parties agreed to move forward with the announcement of the ARF International Tennis Facility.

"The Andy Roddick Foundation looks forward to a long and rewarding relationship with CastleRock in developing well-rounded children and tennis players," said Dr. Lawrence Roddick of the Andy Roddick Foundation. "The Foundation is committed, in principle, to establishing the tennis center at CastleRock and will work together with CastleRock to raise funds to build the tennis facility," he added.

Sal Castillo commented, "CastleRock and the Andy Roddick Foundation International Tennis Center has the USTA's full support."

Dennis Hill, Superintendent of Llano Independent School District (LISD) and Dr. Ryder Warren of Marble Falls Independent School District (MFISD) have both expressed interest in using the facility for district and invitational tournaments.

Happy Kid

Last Tuesday, June 17, 2008, hundreds of members of the media (well, several anyway) came to watch the very first day of the Andy Roddick Foundation/Boys & Girls Club youth tennis program for the Marble Falls and Highland Lakes area. The program, which is also available in some other Texas cities and one Idaho location, works with additional funding from the Rene Lacoste Foundation and USTA to combine tennis instruction with mentoring for college and special nutritional counseling to deal with childhood obesity and diabetes.

Mark Moran and john Arthur martinez worked with groups of kids (who were provided with new, kid-sized racquets) as cameras clicked and pens scratched on reporters' notepads. Dr. Lawrence Roddick, Director of Andy Roddick Youth Tennis Programs, was there for the opening. He brought a racquet used by Andy in his US Open win, which will be donated for an auction or raffle to boost funding for the Andy Roddick Foundation International Tennis Center, planned for the CastleRock Texas development on RR 2147.

Site plans for the International Tennis Center show 17 courts (three indoors), with a retractable roof and very "green" building practices. Although open to the community, the Foundation programs will focus on disadvantaged youth, "teach(ing) children to be not only better tennis players, but better citizens of the world." Local and regional Tennis Center Advisory Board members include Sol Castillo (USTA Texas), Carol Welder (USTA Texas & CATA), Dave Holder (director of fundraising), Marley Porter (CastleRock developer & lead architect), john Arthur martinez (well-known country singer, fine player & CastleRock director of creative marketing), Gil Reyes (Adidas coaching team & former Agassi trainer), and Dr. Lawrence Roddick. Andy Roddick Foundation Honorary Board Members include Sir Elton John, professional golfer Ben Crenshaw, extraordinary cyclist and health activist Lance Armstrong, Violinist and Dave Matthews Band member Boyd Tinsley, and Andy's agent, Ken Myerson.

Expect to see announcements of International Tennis Center fundraisers and donation opportunities soon. For more information, or to volunteer for the kids' program, contact the Andy Roddick Foundation International Tennis Center at CastleRock Texas, 4401 Cottonwood Drive, Cottonwood, TX 78657. Phone (830) 798-9310. Fax (830) 798-9304. Email john Arthur martinez or Dave Holder. If the spirit really moves you and you wish to donate to the International Tennis Center fund right away, make your check out to the Andy Roddick Foundation, be sure to write "CastleRock" on the front of the check, and mail it to either the Foundation or CastleRock. Every little bit helps.

Andy Roddick Foundation Launches Hill Country Youth Tennis Program

In a Castle Rock press release dated May 1, 2008, Dave Holder wrote that Dr. Lawrence Roddick, Director of Youth Programs for the Andy Roddick Foundation (ARF), has just announced the launch of the foundation's first tennis programs in the Texas Hill Country. The programs are in cooperation with the Boys and Girls Club of the Highland Lakes, and will begin June 2, 2008, at the Marble Falls Middle School courts. The Andy Roddick Youth Tennis Program developed in September, 2007, from the vision of Rene Lacoste, the experience of the Roddick family, and financial support from the Rene Lacoste Foundation, the USTA Tennis & Education Foundation, and the ARF. With the launch of these programs, ARF begins the fundraising campaign to build the Andy Roddick Foundation International Tennis Center at CastleRock Texas in Cottonwood Shores.

"I am in a position to make a difference, and feel a certain responsibility to make one of my goals contributing positively to my communities," said Andy Roddick, founder of ARF. "By helping at-risk and underprivileged children through my foundation, we can make this goal a reality."

After turning professional in 2000, it took Andy only one year to turn his sights off the court and onto his community. In 2001, he began the Andy Roddick Foundation, a charity dedicated to "Helping Children Today for Tomorrow." The goal of the foundation is to improve the quality of life and enhance educational and economic opportunities for all children based on the principles of respect for family, education and morality.

The programs will focus on children 6 to 10 years old and will be led by husband-wife team Mark and Julie Moran of Marble Falls. Mark currently coaches the Marble Falls Middle School tennis teams. Julie, a former collegiate competitor and a certified teacher, will assist Mark in the summer programs and then assume the reigns in the fall.

The Boys and Girls Club offers programs and services that promote and enhance the development of boys and girls by instilling a sense of competence, usefulness, belonging and influence. The Boys and Girls Club of the Highland Lakes is now nearly 1,000 members strong and offers a safe place for youth to learn and grow while having fun.

"It is so important to employ a wide variety of activities to inspire and motivate such a huge variety of young personalities! Tennis is a sport that can be incorporated for the rest of their lives regardless of economic status. It will significantly improve the physical health of some children," said Deedy Atkins, Boys & Girls Club Unit Director.

John Racz, Board of Directors and Resource and Development Chairman added, "The summer tennis program fits in beautifully with our current goals and programs."

Dr. Ryder Warren, Superintendent of M.F.I.S.D., commented that "The Marble Falls School District gladly offers the middle school facilities for such a worthwhile endeavor."

To sign up for the ARF summer tennis programs contact: The Boys and Girls Club of the Highland Lakes at (830) 798-2582. Participant registration for current Boys and Girls Club members will be held May 5-9, 2008, at the Boys and Girls Club facility at 1701 Broadway Street in Marble Falls. Nonmembers will register May 12-16.

For more information concerning the fundraising campaign for the Andy Roddick Foundation International Tennis Center please contact john Arthur martinez, jam@281.com or Dave Holder, davecars@zeecon.com, (830) 598-5950.

Area Competitors Shine in 2008 Mason Dr. Pepper Open

(Thanks to Charlie Herrington for the news)

At least eight Marble Falls & Burnet players placed first or second in the popular Dr. Pepper Open held in Mason July 17-20, 2008. I'm relying on Charlie's memory here.

Jim Cornelius won the mens 45 singles, beating Scott Kilpatrick, who placed second. Lana Thomas won the girls 18 singles. Laura Servise won the girls 16 singles (and more; see below).

In doubles, Jo Lynn & Greg Dyer won the 35 mixed. Greg & Kyle Futrell placed second in the 35 mens. Laura Servise and her partner won the 18 mixed. Kyleigh Ann Futrell, fresh from making champs in Waco, placed second in the girls 16 doubles. (I don't know who the girls' partners were.)

If someone has more information about the matches, or has photos, email them to me before July 26 and I'll add to this post.

Jo Lynn Dyer, Harrison Place Second in Major Zone

Greg no slouch, either

The Meadowlakes team of Jo Lynn Dyer and Jennifer Harrison won second place in the 3.5 doubles at the 2008 Alamo City Major Zone a couple of weeks ago in San Antonio. They lost to the #1 seeds in the finals. The draw was large and the competition was good. This is the best finish these two have had at a major zone tourney since they have been playing together. They will play in the Texas Sectional Tourney in September.

Dyer and Harrison defeated Dorothea Rogillio of Trinity & Huntsville's Tanya Rose 6-4, 6-4 in the quarterfinals, won a tough 3-setter in the semis 6-3, 0-6, 7-5 against Wendy Durham & Cynthia Hardy of Palestine and Austin, and finally went down to Corpus Christi's Ida Brazell & Martha Moon 3-6, 2-3 Ret. (ill). All their opponents in the final three matches were highly seeded (as were Jo Lynn & Jennifer: no. 2).

Dyer's husband, Greg, and Austin partner Greg Gold, number 1 seeds in the 4.5 doubles, made it to the semifinals before losing to Guillermo Martin del Campo (Brownsville) & Alfonso Rodriguez (McAllen) 6-4, 7-6 (7). They defeated Paul Cass (Corpus Christi) & Dennis Reblin (San Antonio) 6-4, 2-6, 7-5 in the quarterfinals.

ATP Pros Coming to HSB Clay for Prelude to Tennis Benefit

Bryan Brothers, Sam Querrey, John Isner to practice in Horseshoe Bay

Tim Stallard and his ProLink sports entertainment group are once again bringing top professionals to Horseshoe Bay, this time the week after the 2008 U.S. Open, as a warm-up for his Tennis Classic of Austin. The Classic will be held Thursday, September 11th at 6:00pm at Lakeway World of Tennis, and support the Children of Fallen Soldiers Organization.

Their several days in Horseshoe Bay will give everyone a chance to see top professional players up close, and will include a Resort members' social event and meet-&-greet.

The Tennis Classic of Austin, Stallard's personal event among the many he coordinates around the country (including, this year, the annual Elton John & Billie Jean King AIDS benefit in Atlanta), will support the Children of Fallen Soldiers Organization (www.childrenoffallensoldiers.com).

Here's the entire press release, as supplied by Tim:

AMERICAN TENNIS STARS TO PLAY IN AUSTIN TO BENEFIT CHILDREN OF FALLEN SOLDIERS

World's No. 1 Bryan Brothers to Participate in 9/11 Event

Tickets Available to the Public Starting July 26th

AUSTIN, TX (July 16, 2008): The world's No. 1 doubles team, Bob and Mike Bryan, and ATP Tour Stars John Isner and Sam Querrey will headline the Tennis Classic of Austin on Thursday, September 11th at 6:00pm at Lakeway World of Tennis (1 World of Tennis Square, Austin, TX) benefiting the Children of Fallen Soldiers Organization.

The Bryan Brothers will come straight from the US Open in New York to Central Texas and then go on to Madrid for the Davis Cup showdown with Rafael Nadal and the Spanish Davis Cup team. The Bryan brothers have won the US Open, Wimbledon, French Open and the Australian Open, and last year led the US team to the Davis Cup Title. The Bryans will also be the top seeds to capture the Gold Medal for the USA in the Summer Olympic Games.

"It is always an honor to represent our country in Davis Cup, the Olympics or at a Grand Slam and we are very aware of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country and our freedom," says Mike Bryan. He adds, "I know that Bob, Sam, John and I are excited to come to Texas and to help create awareness and support for the Children of Fallen Soldiers Organization."

ATP tennis star John Isner turned pro in June 2007 after graduating from the University of Georgia, where he was a four time All American. At the 2007 ATP event in Washington, DC, he reached the finals with wins over Tim Henman and Tommy Haas before falling to Andy Roddick 7-5, 6-4. While firing a non-Grand-Slam tournament record 144 aces, Isner went on to the US Open, reaching the 3rd round and winning the first set from Roger Federer in Arthur Ashe Stadium.

American Sam Querrey staked his claim as one of the top players in the world last year when he defeated No. 10 James Blake to advance to the ATP semifinal at the 2007 US Open Series Indianapolis Tennis Championships. In his win over James Blake, Sam fired a career high 36 aces, including a record 10 in a row. In 2008, Sam captured an ATP title at the Tennis Channel Open in Las Vegas, and reached the quarterfinals of the 2008 Monte Carlo Masters Series Event. Querrey was recently named to the US Olympic Team and has been member of US Davis Cup team.

The official charity for the Tennis Classic of Austin is Children of Fallen Soldiers. The project is designed to finance college educations for children of soldiers killed in the War on Terror. So far, 15 children who lost a parent in the line of duty have been identified. All these soldiers were from Ft. Hood and their families still reside in the area. The goal of Children of Fallen Soldiers is to provide each child with a $25,000 college fund when he or she turns 18.

You can learn more about the Children of Fallen Soldiers at www.childrenoffallensoldiers.com .

Dennis McWilliams, sports director of The Hills Country Club says, "We are excited to welcome these young Americans and world class tennis back to the Lakeway World of Tennis." He adds, "This will be a wonderful evening of tennis and family entertainment and will support a great cause. Fans will get a chance to see the best in men's tennis in a very intimate setting."

This classic is proudly sponsored by The United States Tennis Association (USTA), H-E-B, KTBC-TV/FOX 7, KLBJ-AM, BOB-FM, New Mexico Sports Authority, and Beaumont Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Tickets are available on-line starting July 26th through www.etix.com or by calling (800)-514-etix (3849). Ticket prices are $25.00, $35.00 and $50.00.

New Hard Courts at HSB Tennis Center

The HSB Tennis Center's four new hard courts, beside the Andy Roddick Kids' Courts, are finished and scheduled to open the weekend of July 26, 2008. They look great, with excellent windscreens, lights, shaded benches, and a chain-link divider to prevent errant balls from giving us more exercise than we really want on a hot day. They're US-Open-blue, which means you'll be able to see the ball when ESPN televises our next tournament.

The courts are another step in the major renovation and improvement of the Tennis Center property. Watch for demolition of the old hard courts and groundbreaking beside the new ones, to make room for the new spa and exercise facilities. No one likes to play next to a construction site, but the end result should be spectacular.

In the meantime, sign up for lessons from Aland and Michelle. You're gonna need them when Elise and I return from vacation.

Hidden Falls (Formerly Meadowlakes) Getting New Courts

Charlie Herrington, tennis pro at Marble Falls's Hidden Falls Country Club, is looking forward to the coming resurfacing of four hard courts at the former Meadowlakes facility. Although a couple of the current courts will be lost to some club renovation, within a few months there should be four excellent courts to replace the badly cracked (and sometimes moisture-weeping) surfaces, and new fencing as well.

As most readers know, use of the Hidden Falls courts is by membership or fee (unless you're taking a lesson from Charlie). The new courts will be an incentive to join the very reasonably-priced club.

Who knows; they might add some shade to the tennis sitting area and upgrade the storage shed, too. A few new members who express their tennis interest might help.

Former HSB Player & Current Booster Turns 90

Here she is, with great granddaughter Grace Reid, who came all the way from Denver to be with Lucile Reid Brock on her 90th birthday. Lots of tennis friends were among the partygoers at Quail Point on June 7, 2008, honoring Mom, who still really enjoys the HSB tennis luncheons.

Blount, Hawkins Succeed in Westwood Tourney

Jim Hawkins and Gil Blount made it to the consolation finals, and Gil was in the consolation singles finals, of the State Seniors championships held May 23-25, 2008, at Austin's Westwood Country Club.  They finally fell to the number two tournament seeds. To get to there, Gil & Jim bested a team in the semifinals (in three sets) that they hadn't previously beaten. Gil, also, had a semifinal 3-set victory against a player he hadn't beaten before. They credit their ability to survive and thrive in the hot, humid conditions to vigorous play with other HSB and area competitors.

It's nice to have such humble models of tennis excellence.

Herrington, Bicknell Win in San Antonio

Congratulations to Nancy Herrington and her Lampasas Partner, Cheryl Bicknell, who won the women's 3.5 doubles division of the April 11-13, 2008, Gunn Lone Star Levels Tournament in San Antonio defeating San Antonio's top-seeded Melinda Gorena and Athea Livesay in the final 6-2, 6-3. On their way to the final, they defeated more San Antonio players: Mary Druck and Mary Garcia in the quarterfinals, then Nadia de la Pena and Elizabeth Ojeda in the semis.

Horseshoe Bay Mavericks Hold Shootout, Nobody Wounded

(Photos by Don Victorin)

Don Victorin did a great job planning and ramrodding the annual Spring Shootout at Horseshoe Bay Resort Tennis Center April 11 and 12, 2008. Twelve players competed in a World-Team-Tennis-like two-day rotation on three of the red clay courts. Michelle and the Tennis Center supplied donuts and some of the prizes. Entrance fees were distributed to the big winners.

Yes, I played. Don't ask.

Players supplied the vittles for a fine picnic at the Applehead Island pool, hosted by Bob Goodman (the top gun this year). Alan Schmidt was remembered in a special way.

Blount Wins Senior Games Regional

Gil Blount didn't start his weekend expecting to come out on top in the Senior Games regional competition at San Antonio's McFarlin Tennis Center on April 12 and 13, but he did. He got to the finals of the men's 70s singles without dropping a set, then won 6-4, 6-4 against a (formerly?) higher-ranked competitor, Texas #10 70s singles player Horace Ayers. The State competition is next, coming in the Fall.

Gil Blount's Gold Medal. He's wearing it. Note the rock-hard pecs.

MFCTA Women's Doubles Schedules

Click here to email Elise Reid about the current MFCTA women's league offerings. The format and rules are similar (but not identical) to that for the men's league. The format is generally Queen-of-the-Universe (not king-of-the-hill). An introductory email was sent in mid-February, but we need more league players!

Burnet Adult Tennis Society (BATS)

(I assume "adult" refers to age and not something more risque, but I've been wrong before.)

Ed Keyser reminds us that there's open play on Saturday mornings (9:00 AM) and Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings (5:30 PM) at the Burnet High School courts. All skill levels welcome. Bring balls & water.

HSB Resort/USTA March, 2008 Tournament/Photos

RI-CON, Official Tournament Ball Sponsor, and Carter Tannehill

The March 28-30, 2008, Horseshoe Bay Resort/USTA Red Clay Senior/SuperSenior tournament was a big success, even if local players were sometimes outplayed by those from elsewhere in the State (and a couple from outside Texas). Denise Frasier of Marble Falls, won both the women's 50s doubles (with her partner Jacqueline Davis) and the women's singles consolation. Melinda Norris (Horseshoe Bay) and Barbara Smith (Burnet) placed second to Frasier/Davis in the women's 50s doubles, and Bill Wines of Horseshoe Bay won the men's 65s consolation trophy. Some of us (speaking only for myself) felt pretty good just winning a few games.

Here are some photos of nice people.

2008 HSB Tennis Banquet

I think most of these photos were taken by Jim Montz (THANKS, Jim). If I'm wrong, someone please correct me so credit can be given -- Make up your own captions

The Fix Was In

I had nothing to do with the fact that my wife, my mother, and I won three of the 16 door prizes offered by Michelle and Aland at the Spring, 2008 Tennis Banquet. I can only say that it seemed fair, since we had to sit closest to Celebrity Emcee Gil Blount as he held forth with jokes about nuns wielding bedpans (you had to be there).

The Banquet, held on Sunday, February 24, was a big success, with some 64 attendees filling tables at the Resort, sipping complimentary champagne and dining on pasta & chicken. There was an opportunity to thank Ann Wright and the Whitewater staff, and to offer a small souvenir (which won't last long) to Michelle and Aland for their hard work over the past year. There really were 16 door prizes, ranging from gift certificates, to cases of balls, to a brand new Head racquet. I hope someone will send me a few photos to post.

HSB Red Clay Levels Tourney a Huge Success

HSB's first-ever USTA sanctioned tournament, one of the few red clay events in the state, drew over 130 registrants February 16-18, 2008. Rain and cold knocked out one day, but players and observers had a great third day as the competitors played an abbreviated format of singles, doubles, and mixed doubles. The Sunday weather was perfect for play, watching, and relaxing on the Marriott green.

Michelle Stallard and Aland Price did a great job of managing the tournament, scheduling, and keeping things moving. Players came from around the state, with large groups from Austin, Lubbock, and other cities. Aland's father, an experienced USTA referee, was the tournament umpire, and his brother, also a teaching professional played in the open division.

For tournament results, click here.

Click HERE (Don't really click: link deactivated) to register for the NEXT HSB/USTA-sanctioned clay court tournament, March 28-30 (register by March 16). This will be age-stratified, not an NTRP levels tourney.

Roddick - Castle Rock Tennis Center Planned for Cottonwood Shores

On December 7, 2007, Marley Porter, designer and developer of the new Castle Rock complex on Highway 2147 in Cottonwood Shores, announced that the Andy Roddick Foundation has committed to building an international tennis center on property that will be transferred from Castle Rock to the Foundation. Porter told a group of attendees at his monthly Friday evening gatherings that Andy's mother had met with them at Castle Rock the day before and encouraged the public announcement.

The tennis center will be a public facility, but will apparently include private memberships of some kind. Rumors of many courts, opportunities for area league play, etc., have been circulating for some time but, well, . . . rumors are rumors. ?Quien sabe? Final letters of intent have not yet been completed, but Porter expects the land to be transferred in January and construction to start very soon after that.

If you haven't visited the nascent Castle Rock complex yet, it's worth a trip. The plans are ambitious, ranging from living space and hotels to spa, art, Alzheimer's care and assisted living, performance venues, john Arthur's state-of-the-art recording studio, and more, all relatively self-supporting from a "green" standpoint. Architect Porter is no stranger to large, innovative projects, having designed and built award-winning facilities and homes all over the country (including the One World Theatre in Austin).

HSB Tennis Center Improvements Coming

Horseshoe Bay Tennis Center will be getting a significant facelift and many new amenities over the next year or so. Ground will be broken soon for four new hard courts beside the kids' courts, where the large unimproved parking area is now located. The new courts will replace the current hard courts, which will give way to a new HSB spa. The Tennis Center itself will move uphill, to the large flat area across the lagoon from the kids' courts. There will be dressing and workout facilities in the new building, and the plans call for plenty of parking.

MFCTA Meeting & Play January 12, 2008

From the MFCTA Board of Directors (Julie, Breck, Nancy, and Greg) and MFCTA Officers (Julie, Dave, Barbara, Mojo, and Greg):

Mark your calendars for Saturday, January 12, 2008, 8:30 AM, at the MF high school tennis courts for our annual MFCTA business meeting. We will be electing new officers. After the meeting, we'll have a short doubles playday . . . no t-shirts or food supplied, just some tennis fun, assuming reasonable weather. (We'll have the meeting regardless of the weather.)

And please, if you're willing to serve as an officer, send your name ahead of time to Nancy Herrington at nmherrington@academicplanet.com. (If you don't show up, you could be elected "in absentia.")

Kournikova Visit Photos, November, 2007

Thanks to Sallye Johnson for sending these photos of Kournikova, Michelle, Aland, Gil-the-Umpire, and lots and lots of happy kids.

Hawkins Group Men's Schedule (Dec., 2007)

Anna Kournikova at HSB Tennis Center Sat., November 3

On Saturday, November 3rd, everyone is invited to welcome Anna Kournikova to Horseshoe Bay Resort. She will be here to show her support of our efforts to "grow the game" through our new Andy Roddick Kids' Courts. There will be a brief ceremony at 10AM at the Kids' Courts, followed by a kids clinic and a doubles match between Anna and Michelle and some of the kids from the juniors program. In addition to Anna, country music artist, Kyle Park will perform a free concert before and after the tennis. Texas Governor Rick Perry will make Anna an "Honorary Texan" in recognition of all the great charities that she supports. Michael Thomas will honor her with a special presentation from Horseshoe Bay, as well.

Michelle reminds us that Anna is a beautiful champion who won two grand slam doubles titles, was ranked #1 in the world in doubles and #8 in the world in singles. She has also been featured on the cover of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue, and consistently named as People Magazine's sexiest athlete. Michelle has watched Anna's commitment to growing our game and support of numerous charities. Last year she was honored by the Boys and Girls Clubs of America for her support and promotion of a healthy and active life style. She was the first player to volunteer to support the Bush-Clinton Serving for Tsunami Relief event at the Toyota Center in Houston in 1995.

Anna is rarely given credit for being one of the great players of our generation. She was one of only three players to beat Steffi Graf on grass in the 1990s. She also reached the semi-finals of Wimbledon. It takes more than good looks to achieve such world class results.

Come and join everyone to give Anna a big Horseshoe Bay welcome.

Francis, Blount, Hawkins Succeed at Super Senior Sectional

Three MFCTA members brought home hardware (and ranking points) from the 2007 Lakeway World of Tennis Super Senior Sectional tournament October 18-21. (It's hard to think of oneself as a "super senior," but in tennis that appelation comes at a very young age.)

Peggy Francis (Delaware Springs) and Gil Blount (Oak Ridge) won the Century + 30 mixed doubles, defeating top-seeds Kugler & Kugler 6-4, 6-2 in the finals. They had defeated second-seeded Noble & Rodriguez 6-0, 6-1 in the semis.

Gil and long-time partner Jim Hawkins (Horseshoe Bay) survived two three-set matches to win the Men's 65 doubles consolation, defeating Brecht & Denton 4-6, 7-6, 6-3. Priot to that, they had beaten Brown & Smith 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Peggy and partner Joan Kingsley (San Antonio) also played in the Women's 70 doubles, winning a match against Lyckman & Nichols (6-0, 6-2) in the round-robin.

Dyer & Gold Win a Big One, No. 1 in Texas 4.5s

Greg Dyer (left) and Greg Gold with 1st place hardware. (Photo by Jo Lynn Dyer)

Top-seeds Greg Dyer (Meadowlakes) and Greg Gold of Austin won the NTRP 4.5 Doubles at the recent Texas Sectional tournament in San Antonio. The won a series of tough matches against other ranked players before defeating former Bolletieri Academy coach Charlie Rivera and former Baylor coach David Luedeke (both of Waco) 7-6, 6-0 in the finals. The competition in the final match was fierce, and slightly marred by a couple of umpire sportsmanship calls against Rivera (one allegedly involving a clash between a racquet and a netpost; the racquet was fatally wounded).

The 600 ranking points they won in the sectional bolster Dyer's and Gold's number one rank in Texas 4.5 doubles (by a substantial margin). They were tied for number one prior to the tournament. USTA Sectional tournaments are larger and more competitive than local ones, offering far more ranking points to attract the state's best players.

Jo Lynn Dyer and Jennifer Harrison of Meadowlakes also played in the sectional, making it to the round of 16 in the women's 3.5 doubles before losing two tie-break sets to 5th-seed Martha Moon and Andrea Zomer of Corpus Christi.

HSB Tennis Center Court Improvements

For those who haven't noticed, in addition to the 3 great Andy Roddick Kids' Courts and bleachers (which were featured in the October issue of Tennis Life, p. 40), we have a fine new ball machine, new windscreens, cold water on every court, and brand new awnings for shade between the courts. Definitely worth the price of admission.

HSB U.S. Open Social

Horseshoe Bay players and friends enjoyed a few hours of cutthroat competition before settling down to drinks and snacks and watching the men's final of the U.S. Open on September 10. Michelle and Aland guided play on hard and clay courts. Aland gracefully lost his serve in one of the matches. All in all, it was a charicature of doubles play at the Open, with booze. (Photos courtesy of Gil Blount.)

Jim learns the importance of poise & posture.

Grace under pressure.

You gonna eat that?

No sarcasm, just nice folks.

Roddick Dedicates HSB Children's Courts

On July 19, Andy Roddick came to Horseshoe Bay to dedicate the Andy Roddick USTA Kids' Courts at Horseshoe Bay Tennis Center. There was a great turnout of HSB folks, area tennis players, USTA and USTA Texas officials, and Horseshoe Bay Resort dignitaries to fill the bleachers and watch Roddick and HSB pro Aland Price work with the first "official" group of youngsters. Michelle Stallard got compliments all around for her innovation and hard work toward making these courts a reality. The USTA voiced its appreciation to her and to Horseshoe Bay for donating the land. Austin television stations took lots of video, including some of Ashley Stallard holding her own as she rallied with Andy on the shortened courts (she holds her own on full-sized courts as well).

HSB Memorial Tennis Tourney and Dick Reitz Barbecue October 13

Every year, Horseshoe Bay and the Dick Reitz family host a day of tennis and a very nice barbecue in memory of Dick and others who have passed to that Centre Court beyond the clouds. We'll gather at 8AM for donuts and coffee and to meet our team captains. Play will be from about 9AM until noon. Sign up by calling the HSB Tennis Center (598-2591). Winners will be announced at the Dick Reitz Memorial Dinner and casino party that evening (October 13) at Quail Point.

Those who have attended both events in the past know that this is a great day of fun and remembrance with the Reitz family and others. You need not have ever met Dick to enjoy the evening!

Peggy Francis, Local Player, Nationally Ranked

Peggy Francis of Delaware Springs, near Burnet, has been playing national tournaments since she was 15, when she first graced the National Grass Court Championships in Germantown, PA. She'll return to that venue to play in the women's 75s singles next year. She has fond memories of the Pennsylvania houses and landscape, which were unusual for "a girl from El Paso."

Peggy started playing in the sixth grade, recalls being on the high school team in El Paso, and was tennis coach at Eastwood High. She was always ranked number 1 or number 2 for her age in the Southwest. She and her partner, San Antonio’s Joan Kingsley, have been ranked as high as number 2 in the U.S. in Women's 70s doubles, and are currently number one in Texas 70s.

Peggy and Joan regularly play in the national championships on all four surfaces (hard, clay, grass, and indoor); Peggy has done it since 1988. Their most recent was the May, 2007, hard court nationals in La Jolla, CA.

International Friendship Cup

In November, 2006, Peggy and Laura Leach, of Boston, were invited to Japan to represent the U.S. in the Friendship Cup. The pair finished second in an outstanding field of 70s women, finally losing to the Japanese team. Only one other U.S. team, the 80s women, placed higher. Peggy's husband Jim was there to watch her play.

The Friendship Cup was endowed by Mr. Suzuki, who left funds to support the international series when he passed away at age 99. Teams came from many different countries, including Japan, the U.S., Canada, Australia, and Taiwan. The age-group format covers ten years rather than five, from 50s to 80s, for both men and women. Unfortunately, the Suzuki funds have dwindled with time; 2006 will be its final year.

An Approachable Champ

The final good news is that Peggy is a staple in Highland Lakes area tennis, playing several times a week with the "A" ladies (who occasionally let men fill in as subs). She's one of the nicest players around, but don't expect her to go easy on you just because you're male.

HSB Clinics with Michelle Stallard

Michelle, an experienced teacher, coach, and all-around nice person, regularly offers clinics for both juniors and adults. They are open to both members and nonmembers, for various fees. If you have any doubts, read about her successes in the Juniors Section. Click here for the Summer, 2007 Juniors program or call the HSB Tennis Center (830-598-2591) for more information.

HSB Cocktail Mixed Doubles September 28

The next cocktail mixed doubles night is Friday, September 28 at the Tennis Center (dinner members $8, guests $10) from 4:30 to 6:30, with cocktails afterward at the Tall Texan.

Finally, an unpretentious place to drink while sweating.

Bring a can of balls (for the tennis, not the drinking). Sign up by 10 AM Friday September 28.

MFCTA Men Laughed at Odds, Planned Drubbing for Lakeway

The Hawkins-led MFCTA men's league fully expected to defeat eight of Lakeway World of Tennis's best doubles teams on Saturday, May 12. When the dust settled, Greg & Chuck, Jeff & Bill, Scott & Dick had won their matches and the victory party was held in good spirits. A very good showing for our first inter-club match, and one against a much larger group of players!

Jim's lineup was

#1 Greg Dyer and Chuck Michie (W)

#2 Jeff Leedy and Bill Wines (W)

#3 Jim McNabb and Mark Crouse

#4 Gil Blount and J.C.Williams

#5 Jim Hawkins and Donald Farmer

#6 Scott Kilpatrick and Dick Hollenbeck (W)

#7 Keith Bedard and Bruce Anderson

#8 Dave Kithil and Bill Dickey

Don Farmer has been activated from the Galveston farm club. Jim says Don has been on standby, and although not fully recovered from his last birthday party, has agreed to give the team the benefit of his infinite wisdom and skill on the courts.

Dyers, Harrison, Francis Lead Area Adults in Texas Tournaments

Georgetown Tennis Center, GTC Summer Slam 2007

Jennifer Harrison, Jo Lyn Dyer

Area players did very well at three tournaments on the weekend of May 4-6, 2007. I had my camera at the Georgetown Summer Slam, where Jo Lyn and Jennifer won the women's 3.5 doubles. I tried to take a photo of myself as well, but I couldn't get in front of the camera fast enough after I pressed the shutter button.

Waco Super Senior Sectional. Peggy Francis of Burnet (Delaware Springs) and her partner Joan Kingsley of San Antonio, placed second in the 65s doubles. Next week, Peggy and Joan head for La Jolla, California, for the 70s doubles of the National Hard Surface championships.  Bill Wines, Horseshoe Bay, made the semifinals of the 65s singles consolation.

Buccaneer Days Adult Major Zone, Corpus Christi. Top seeds Greg Dyer (Meadowlakes) and Austin's Greg Gold won the 4.5 doubles without dropping a set.

Georgetown Summer Slam. Top seeds Jo Lyn Dyer and Jennifer Harrison, Meadowlakes, won the 3.5 doubles. Laura Servise of Llano placed second in the women's open round robin. Bill Reid, Horseshoe Bay, won the 3.0 singles consolation.

Please let me know where YOU are playing and, later (if you don't mind), how you did. Photos would be a real plus, even if they're of someone else (but Elise and I are the only ones who have unfettered rights to post granddaughter pictures).

Horseshoe Bay Juniors Development Programs

Michelle Stallard's highly successful juniors programs have a special place in Horseshoe Bay tennis. She and Aland Price have created a wide array of clinics, private lesson opportunities, conditioning programs, leagues, team support, and elite training for junior players of all ages and levels. For all the information, schedules, and application materials, call (830) 598-2591 or email mstallard@hsbresort.com.

HSB Kids Courts Completed

The USTA-sponsored children's courts planned for the HSB Tennis Center have become a reality. As of mid-June, Dobbs Tennis Courts of Austin was completing the surfacing and some mysterious metal framing for structures had appeared. In late June everything was finished and the courts were in use. Michelle told me not to spread it around, but she and husband Tim (who is mentioned in a recent television special on Jim Courier's InsideOut and Courier's Kids special) are working to bring a major star to Horseshoe Bay for the dedication. DO NOT TELL MICHELLE THAT I TOLD YOU.

MFCTA Men Have Rematch with Lakeway at HSB

The MFCTA men played valiantly, but only one of our seven teams managed to win in the rematch with Lakeway Saturday, June 23 at the Horseshoe Bay Tennis Center. Greg Dyer and Mark Moran, playing in the number one slot, won in three sets. Some of the other matches were close, and others not so close (don't ask). The matches were played on both hard courts and HSB's famous red clay, a treat for the Lakeway men (who didn't have the grace to lose a couple). Guido, the CPR-trained gorilla, was not needed after all.

The MFCTA lineup: #1 Greg Dyer & Mark Moran, #2 Larry Brumfield & Bill Wines, #3 Jim Cornelius & J.C. Williams, #4 Jim McNabb & Mike Atkinson, #5 Scott Kilpatrick & Dick Hollenbeckm #6 Keith Bedard & Bruce Anderson, #7 Bill Reid & Jim Hawkins.

Mixed-Up Tennis Results

The June 8, 2007, Mixed Up Doubles benefit tournament was a great success. In spite of a very reasonable entry fee, and thanks to great volunteers and participation, the tournament donated $400 to the Relay for Life and MFCTA made $250.

The winners had to fight their way through a field of 19 mixed doubles teams from all over the Highland Lakes area, including Marble Falls, Burnet, Llano, Kingsland, and Horseshoe Bay. Nancy Herrington and Greg Dyer took first place after a hard late-night final match against second-place winners Laura Servise and Adam Hassel. Becky Cunningham and Mark Moran won the consolation division.

Click Here to email your suggestions to the completely unauthorized, unofficial, who-asked-you-anyway poll for a men's league name. Choose from the randomly-typed words below or be more creative and write one yourself. I'll post the most popular ones and forward all suggestions to Jim Hawkins, who may or may not do anything with them.

MFCTA Men Play Wimberley & San Marcos

I'm not sure how we did in the end, but Jim H. was frantically writing down winning scores. Bruce's and mine weren't among them.

The Wimberley folks extended fine hospitality, including a great barbecue spread and restrooms only half a mile away. Lots of MFCTA spouses and kids came as well. The artsy photos were taken by Gil, Elise, and me. I started to label them with names and funny titles, but it got out of hand. Make some up (no prizes).

If you didn't make the cut, it's probably because you were blurry, or a victim of shrinking bandwidth. If anyone has additional photos, email them to me and I'll try to post some of them (I get to decide which ones).

Price Arrives at HSB Tennis Center

Aland Price is the new head tennis professional at the Horseshoe Bay Tennis Center, complementing Director of Tennis Michelle Stallard. Aland is a former All-American singles and doubles player for Abilene Christian University, and comes to us from Birchwood Tennis and Fitness Club in Abilene (where he was Director of Tennis). You should also know that he has a great reputation as a teacher of adults and juniors, is very pleasant and good looking (just like all those California pros in the movies), and has a pony tail. That won't be hard to spot on the Horseshoe Bay courts.

Bruce Anderson Mystery Samaritan

What HSB men's "B" player was seen volunteering hours of his time, and risking cardiac arrest and mud poisoning, to help repair flood damage at Ann Wright's home? Good on ya, B . . . oops, almost gave it away.

MFCTA Men's League Underway

(See photo at top of page.) It was cooler than usual, but a dry, calm day on Saturday, March 17, 2007, when the new MFCTA 3.0+ men's league started official play at the MFHS courts. Largely organized by Jim Hawkins under USTA aegis, 24 men signed up and 16 were present for the inaugural matches. Jim introduced Julie Stice Docherty, MFCTA President and announced a couple of birthdays. The pre-match fellowship, gently encouraged by Jim's coaching whistle, should be a part of the next 24 weeks of play, in which each member will get to play with and against every other in a friendly king-of-the-hill format.

HSB Tourney Big Success

By the time many of you read this, you'll know that the Horseshoe Bay Tennis Center pre-banquet doubles tournament was a phenomenal success. The courts were filled on Saturday, February 17, with at least 46 A men & women, B women, and Mavericks.

Doubles teams from HSB and the surrounding area, some as far away as San Antonio, played up to seven one-set matches in a round robin format. Members had a chance to play some nonmember friends and strangers in the mix, and the competition was fierce. The tournament was very well organized and staffed (no surprise). The big turnout extended play beyond the predicted hour; no one complained. There were hors d'oeurves and margaritas after play. I was too busy playing to take many photos, or to get details of the other sections, but everyone I saw was smiling through his or her sweat (sorry ladies, I meant "dew").

I was allowed to join the A men for a change, and played with Larry Brumfield. With his serve, his forehand, his backhand, and his speed at the net, we made a great team. How else could I ever say I won a few service games against the likes of Gil, Jim, john Arthur, Scott, and Gerry?

MFCTA Kickoff Successful

The Marble Falls Community Tennis Association (MFCTA) had a fine kickoff event on January 27. Over 40 adults and kids attended and got prestigious MFCTA t-shirts. Most played mixed doubles in a morning "king of the hill" tournament. Sal Castillo, USTA Texas Section Service Representative, set up a mini-court for the youngest, inexperienced kids, who played mini-tennis with Nerf balls (see article above on kids' courts coming to Horseshoe Bay Tennis Center). Lunch was served, and there were drawings for door prizes provided by the USTA.

Many thanks go out to business sponsors Edwards Risk Management, Inc. (prevention is better than cure), Central Texas Glass (you break it, you bought it), Consultants Advertising Retail Sales (not sure what they do, but it's appreciated), Pottery Ranch, (how many pots does it take to qualify for an agricultural exemption?), Charlie's Tennis Services (now, who could that be?), Moe's Restaurant (great pizza), and Jim's Electric (highest voltages in the area).

Here's what Pat Dickey said about the MFCTA event:

The (MFCTA) tennis tournament was great. I think there were about 40 people there. The courts were full. We had ages from old ones, me, to Luke. The tennis was great and some outstanding players were there. Some of our A ladies were there along with a couple of the A men.

We played a rotation of four games, then the losers moved over to the next court and the winners stayed and switched partners so we got to meet, greet and had a REALLY good time.

We had a lunch and barbequed hamburgers that were cooked on a grill they brought over. We had drinks chips and in the morning orange juice and donuts.

They really did a bang up job, we met a lot of good fun tennis players and everyone was extremely nice, polite and encouraging for the players like me who were not so good. The level of all the players were very very high with open players, 5.0 players, and some really good outstanding players, and there was some GREAT competetion for the good players but the format was conducive to all players. Good job and we are all looking forward to the next event.

If that's not reason enough to join (mfcta@nctv.com), there will be another event in the Spring.

Wines wins in Dallas

Bill Wines took first place in the men's 65s singles at the recent Dallas Super Senior Open. Who knew?

Answer to the mystery photo: Lucile Reid Brock, of Horseshoe Bay

She was a New Mexico state doubles champion and singles runner-up in high school. The picture was taken by her father just after high school graduation, during a trip to Hollywood.
